In Israel, Pence hastens USA embassy move

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas addresses the PLO Central Committee in the West Bank city of Ramallah

VICE PRESIDENT MIKE PENCE: We welcome the news that thanks to the firm stand taken by President Trump and House and Senate Republicans, the government shutdown in Washington, D.C., is coming to an end.

United States Vice President Mike Pence announced on Monday that the United States will relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem before the end of 2019, ahead of schedule, honoring a bipartisan commitment made over 20 years ago, enshrined in the Jerusalem Embassy Relocation Act of 1995.

Pence's visit to the Knesset prompted a demonstration from thirteen Arab Israeli lawmakers who were ushered out at the start of his speech.

That is much earlier than expected, with officials claiming last month the move would take three to four years to come to fruition.

Pence met Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi on Saturday and held talks with Jordan's King Abdullah II on Sunday before arriving in Israel.

Abbas told European Union diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini that the Palestinians were still committed to the stalled Middle East peace process and urged the bloc to take a more "political" role. It is also the right thing to do. However, Trump asserts that this was "nothing more or less than a recognition of reality" of the status of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

"America has no greater friend than Israel, and Israel has no greater friend than the United States of America", Mr Netanyahu said.

Palestinians seek East Jerusalem, including the walled Old City with its holy sites, as the capital of their own future state.

Pence cited passages from the Bible and alluded to biblical history, as well as the parallels between the founding of the United States and Israel, many times during his 30-minute address. He praised Israeli leaders for their willingness to negotiate with the Palestinians, and called on the Palestinian leadership to return to the negotiating table.

The Italian said the two sides needed "to show more than ever before their engagement with the global community" to work for peace.

In remarks afterwards, Pence said he was "hopeful that we are at the dawn of a new era of renewed discussions to achieve a peaceful resolution to the decades-long conflict that has affected this region".

He was warmly received by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on his arrival and was greeted by a ceremonial Israel Defense Forces honor guard normally formed only for national leaders, prior a closed-door meeting with Netanyahu.

Abbas and other Palestinian leaders refused to meet Pence, making his visit a rare one by a high-ranking USA official not to include talks with the Palestinians.

European Union Foreign Policy chief Federica Mogherini said the EU is ready to take a "central role" alongside the United States in mediating talks between Israel and the Palestine.

Right-wing politicians, as well as Ma'aleh Adumim Mayor Benny Kashriel, have hoped that US President Donald Trump would not only support that inclusion, but would also allow Israel to build on E1 and to annex the area in advance of a peace deal.
