The Tide Pod Challenge: it's better that we know

Do NOT Take the'Tide Pod Challenge Experts Warn

In recent days, the "Tide Pod Challenge" has gone viral, with teenagers trying to eat pods meant to clean laundry.

The Tide pod videos constitute a violation of the Google-owned (GOOGL) video platform's longstanding policy, which prohibits potentially harmful or unsafe content. Facebook, the social media giant that also owns Instagram, is also taking action to combat the trend. "We work to quickly remove flagged videos that violate our policies".

There's some more context here.

YouTube recently said it's taking down clips that show people taking bites of the pods.

The pods in question are stuffed with pepperoni and have mozzarella swirls on top that are dyed bright blue and orange - just enough WTF to perhaps act as a "gateway food" that lures Tide Pod eaters back to lives of real sustenance.

Despite the craze, the Poison Control Center reported that the overwhelming majority of calls for Tide Pods and other household items were due to kids 5 years of age and under.

In an earlier statement of its own, Tide's parent company Proctor and Gamble said it was working with "leading social media sites" to encourage the removal of the videos. "DOING LAUNDRY. Nothing else".

In Waynesboro, assistant high school principal Rita Sterner-Hine recommended that parents monitor their children's social media use and warn them of the dangers of consuming laundry detergent pods. The unsafe stunt of ingesting liquid detergent, mostly by teenagers, went viral on social media. Last year, College Humor published a video titled "Don't Eat the Laundry Pods".

Ann Marie Buerkle, acting chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, told CBS that ingesting the liquid within detergent pods could be deadly. "Only use the packets for their intended use and be sure to store them up and away", Kaminski said.

It's gotten so bad that in the first 15 days of 2018, the American Association of Poison Control Centers received as many calls about intentional consumption of laundry pods as it did in the entirety of 2016, according to CNN.
