Nintendo Introduces the Labo Cardboard Kits for Switch

The Nintendo 3DS just had its best month in years

You guessed it - Super Mario Bros. Now it's 2018 and kids want more.

You can not use Nintendo Labo without a Nintendo Switch, outright. These cardboard construction products are created to be interactive with the Switch in mind, opening the door for some of the most uniquely designed gaming accessories seen to date due to its balance between simplicity and complexity by just using cardboard and the Switch.

Here's how it works: "With each Nintendo Labo kit, kids can transform modular sheets of cardboard - specially created to interact with the Nintendo Switch console and Joy-Con controllers - into creations called Toy-Con".

It's a risky one, too: $299 Dollars for a Nintendo Switch plus $69 or $79 USD for Labo is a big expense to swallow for "people who barely touch game consoles", the audience Kimishima is trying to court in the coming year. The keys of the cardboard piano goes down as you push; the reel of the fishing pole will turn as you use it.

We have to say we like the idea that Nintendo Labo will bring, revitalising a sense of imagination that the gaming world can sometimes feel like it loses, especially as games become the be-all and end-all for imagination in today's society.

The initial iterations of Nintendo Labo will come in two kits: The Variety Kit and the Robot Kit.

One is the Variety Kit which comes with the piano, fishing rod and a few other creations. Each note pressed on the piano will then play out of the Nintendo Switch's speakers. At any rate, I'm also guessing that Nintendo and/or third-party manufacturers will step in with replacement cardboard and string packages sometime after the Nintendo Labo's launch. While aimed at kids, there's some, uh, cross-generational appeal here (ROBOT KIT!). The whole thing requires players to build up the bits of cardboard that come in the box to create a number of cool, real-life creations.

Um, WHAT?! My 9-year-old just lost his mind and asked for a list of jobs he can do to earn money for it. These will be fairly expensive purchases though, with the variety kit costing $69.99 and the robot kit costing $79.99. For now, you can check out the first look video below. There's also a house that you can play with by sliding in different blocks, and a motorbike controller that lets you play a racing game by holding the cardboard handles. After a vague announcement, Nintendo has announced the Nintendo Labo, a typically Nintendo-innovative and weird way to play with your Nintendo Switch.

Man, '80s kids are going to be so jealous.

I turned to him and asked him what he thought of the Labo.
