7 more flu-related deaths reported in Dallas County

The County Health and Human Services Agency reported 52 more people have died from the flu bringing the total deaths this flu season to an all-time high of 142 flu deaths.

Summit County Public Health reported on January 12 five flu-related deaths (4 adults and 1 pediatric).

Those who died were a 78-year-old from Cleveland, a 101-year-old from Euclid and a 95-year-old from Rocky River, the collaborative reported.

Those flu deaths are reported voluntarily, often by hospitals or long-term care facilities like nursing homes.

More than 400 people have died from the flu around the country.

Eighty-seven percent of the current cases are influenza A. Pour said it's unclear if this is the peak of the flu season.

Symptoms include fever or chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and tiredness. A year ago at this point, only 311 flu patients had been hospitalized statewide.

The Health Division recommends everyone over the age of six months receive an influenza vaccination and take preventive actions.

"This year, we've had increased activity and Oklahoma was one of the first states to start experiencing more widespread activity", said Dr. David Chansolme M.D, Medical Director of Infection Prevention for Integris Health.

Get to the doctor within 48 hours of the onset of flu as they may prescribe antivirals which can effectively reduce the symptoms.
