Ford working on 'Mach 1' electric SUV

In recent years we have seen many major auto manufacturers turn their eye to electric vehicles. It plans to bring out 24 hybrids and 16 electric vehicles by 2022.

The No. 2 US automaker said its business structure was "out of sync" with its revenue, and plans to cut the number of passenger-car models and develop more trucks and sport utility vehicles focused on profitable niches like rugged off-road models.

In a discussion with Motor Authority, Ford spokesperson Said Deep said the cherished name is not 100-percent locked in for the electric SUV. Hackett has been credited with plans for the company to play a wider role in the wider transport "operating system" and step up investment in greener vehicles.

The new investment figure is much higher than the previous $4.5 billion the company said they would invest by 2020.

At this week's Detroit auto show, Ford's president of global markets Jim Farley presented the carmaker's plan of shelling out $11 billion to introduce 40 EVs to the market by 2022.

Ford Motor Company has confirmed two additional electrified vehicles today ahead of the Detroit Auto Show.

FORD has revealed that it will bring the "Mach 1" badge out of retirement, and slap it on an all-new "performance battery electric vehicle" due in 2020. Presumably, that means fossil-fuel cars will be dead soon.

After the speech, she told reporters that "it's really incumbent on the manufacturers and the high-tech industry to assuage those concerns".

Ford's shift to the electric vehicle strategy has been more than six months in the making after Hackett replaced former chief executive Mark Fields in May.

While Tesla has a jump in the premium market, Diess said, VW can overcome that advantage through its ability to mass produce battery charged electric vehicles.

However, the appeal of a new vehicle smell isn't universal, and Ford is anxious that its models smell too much for Chinese consumers. One aim of Ford's "Team Edison" is to identify and develop electric-vehicle partnerships with other companies, including suppliers, in some markets, according to Sherif Marakby, vice president of autonomous vehicles and electrification. Since they are not all-electric, buyers get to fall back on more traditional engine types - in case those electric motors don't work well.
