Is Facebook About To Lose $31 Billion?

News Feed FYI: Bringing People Closer Together | Facebook Newsroom

In a Facebook post on 12 January, Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, confirmed the social media giant is decreasing the amount of public content from media publishers and brands in favour of prioritising friends and family posts in users' news feeds.

Last week, Facebook announced more changes are coming to your news feed in 2018.

Organisations on Facebook may see the popularity of their posts decrease as a result, the firm acknowledged. And while Facebook has worked to pacify fears about these changes, it has acknowledged that the changes will have a negative effect in the short term.

Speaking to Adweek, WPP chief Sir Martin Sorrell said Facebook's move "seems to be the right thing to do, because there are certain publishers who are responsible publishers and there are certain [others] that you need to monitor more carefully".

"We can feel more connected and less lonely, and that correlates with long-term measures of happiness and health".

After more than a year under fire for how it delivers information to users. And if they spend more time scrolling through them, Facebook gets to show them more ads. "But the pressure will be on publishers and brands to create content that generates conversations if they want to improve their odds of being seen in News Feed". "Start making a list of what are the most salacious, engaging conversations you have with people in your community", Di-Masi says.

Facebook Inc shares closed at $179.37 on Friday, down $8.40 (-4.47%).

"But I also expect the time you do spend on Facebook will be more valuable", he added.

Zuckerberg acknowledged that the recent decision may bite deep into the viewership, but having happy customers will mean the business will thrive in the long term too.

What does the change mean for content creators and brand managers who have relied on Facebook to build a loyal following? And publishers and brands put a lot of effort into being there. Sensationalized, partisan or flat out bogus news stories mislead people. "Analysts believe publishers are going to lose web traffic because of Facebook's new algorithms and that will make it even more imperative to engage readers directly with their content. Readers loyally pay for news they can trust and will be forced to get it directly from those trusted source, rather than third parties".

Facebook representatives did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

"It wants people who have been friends to become even closer, to have deeper discussions (on Facebook)". We always recommend publishers have a well-rounded and diverse footprint for distributing content - whether it's Facebook, Google, Twitter, Apple News, partnerships, email, search or another route.

Next we'll show you how you can control the order in which content is displayed on your personal News Feed.

"Mosseri said Facebook will 'continue to value publisher content, '" said the CNN article. And false news may still spread-for instance, if a relative or friend posts a link with a false article that has many comments, the post will still be prominently displayed on a user's News Feed.

Goh Theng Kiat, CMO of OCBC Bank said the move was a positive one by Facebook for the consumer.

Facebook's stated goal of its recalibration is to bring people together. Zuckerberg already signaled this would happen late previous year, when he said the company's planned investments in preventing abuse would hurt profitability.
