Turkey condemns USA plans to build new Syrian border security force

Turkey sees YPG as the offshoot of outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

Turkey will interfere "if the terrorists in Afrin do not surrender", Erdogan also said, adding that Turkish forces "are destroying the western wing of this corridor with the Idlib operation".

A senior Syrian Kurdish official said on Sunday that fighting between the YPG and Turkish forces was already under way.

The PKK/PYD is the Syrian offshoot of the PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the USA and the EU. But the USA has been arming some of Syria's Kurds to defeat the Islamic State group in Syria - a sore point in already tense U.S.

Turkey has long protested USA support for the PKK/PYD while Washington sees it as a "reliable ally" in its fight against Daesh in Syria.

The Turkish president said "despite it all" he wants to work with the U.S.in the region and hopes it will not side with the YPG during the upcoming Afrin operation.

The U.S.is working with its Syrian militia allies to train a "Border Security Force" to patrol the borders in northern and eastern Syria.

Ibrahim Kalin, the presidential spokesman, said the US was taking steps to legitimize and solidify the YPG.

A spokesman for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan denounced the USA -led coalition's plans to train a border security force in northern Syria.

He went on to say that Turkey has taken no measure to counter the terrorist group in the region.

The Turkey-PKK conflict has killed an estimated 40,000 people since 1984 and the resumption of hostilities in July 2015 killed more than 3,300 people.

"I hope that during an Afrin operation, these powers will not make the mistake of appearing to be on the same side as a terror organisation", Mr Erdogan said in an apparent reference to the United States during a rally in the northern Turkish city of Tokat.

Roj said the Kurdish militia will fight to "defend our gains, our territories".

Listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US and the European Union, the PKK has waged a terror campaign against Turkey for more than 30 years, leading to the deaths of more than 40,000 security forces and civilians - including more than 1,200 since July 2015 alone, when it resumed its armed campaign against the Turkish state following a fragile cease-fire.
