Trump Expands Offshore Drilling in “Assault” on Biodiversity and Coastal & Indigenous Communities

The Trump administration last week proposed opening almost all USA offshore waters to oil and gas drilling, a move aimed at boosting domestic energy production and which sparked protests from coastal states, environmentalists and the tourism industry. "As a result of discussion with Governor Scott and his leadership, I am removing Florida from consideration for any new oil and gas platforms". Rick Scott of Florida and Larry Hogan of Maryland.

Other states, like North Carolina, have said this is an unfair move and called on the administration to allow them to opt out of drilling. too.

Florida state waters extend 3 nautical miles from the shore on the Atlantic, and 9 nautical miles on the Gulf side, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Rick Scott voiced opposition soon after the plan's January 4 release, a letter submitted by the state Department of Environmental Protection past year did not oppose the drilling plan or ask for Florida to be exempted.

Like Florida, California and other coastal states "rely on our lovely coasts for tourism and our economy", Lieu said, adding that he believes courts will strike down the drilling plan.

Oceana, an environmental lobby group, said it was pleased that Zinke had removed Florida from areas open to drilling.

Zinke spokeswoman Heather Swift said Friday his office would provide no further information about the conversation with Brown.

In a letter sent to Secretary Zinke, Merkley and Wyden, along with 20 of their colleagues, requested that OR and other affected states be given the same treatment that the Trump Administration gave Florida and be immediately exempted from any new offshore oil OR gas leases.

Washington Governor Inslee statement following call with Sec. "Secretary Zinke agreed with concerns about the economic risks that offshore drilling could bring to OR and committed to work with the governor". Obama's 2017-2022 plan would be replaced by the new program when it is finalized. Instead, the letter warned about the effects of oil and gas activities on the environment and urged that "long-term protection of Florida's sensitive coastal and marine resources should be of paramount concern" in developing a drilling plan.

"Securing reliable sources of energy helps fuel other industries like tourism, especially in states like Florida that relies on more than 200 million barrels of gasoline and diesel each year to fuel its economy".
