She's Back! 2019 Ford Ranger Debuts In Detroit At NAIAS

Detroit Auto Show: The 2019 Ford Ranger is a high tech little truck

America loves trucks and it loves trucks with heritage even more, so there's a lot riding on the 2019 Ford Ranger.

The company released some details about the truck at midnight, but more will come when the truck makes its debut at the show.

Ford has said production will begin later this year and that it will come equipped with a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine, 10-speed auto transmission and high-strength steel frame backbone, and available in 2WD or 4WD.

The package adds protective skid plates, upgraded tires, off-road-tuned shocks and suspension, a Terrain Management System and Trail Control.

Rolling out of an assembly plant in Wayne, Michigan, the new Ranger is based on an architecture Ford developed for sale around the world, but engineers say every piece of the USA version's frame is new. Although not being a diesel unit, the engine is likely to make the new Ranger the most powerful petrol ute in the class.

In addition, the FX4 also gets Ford's brand-new Trail Control system, which allows the driver to set a speed between 1 and 20 miles per hour that the truck will automatically maintain on the trail, taking care of the throttle and braking on its own.

Ford won't say when the facelifted global Ranger is due in SA, but it will surely precede or coincide with the soon-to-be-revealed Raptor version, which is set to go on sale here in 2019. Ford chose to bring the Ford Ranger back partly due to increased customer demand in the mid-size truck market, which has seen an increase in USA sales by 83% since 2014.

"Ranger's proven 2.3-liter EcoBoost provides a torque target on par with competing V6 engines, but with the efficiency of a four-cylinder", said Thai-Tang. Marketing-speak translation: Ford wants buyers willing to splurge on the Ranger because they think it's cool, even if they in no way need a pickup truck. The 2019 Ford Ranger will be offered in XL, XLT and Lariat trim levels with available Chrome and Sport appearance and FX Off-Road packages, and in SuperCab or SuperCrew body styles. The Ranger features styling and performance both inside and outside, which means this truck should preform well both on the pavement and in the dirt. It has four modes: Normal, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, and Sand. The new Selectshift 10-speed automatic is standard. Also available is FordPass Connect 4G LTE with Wi-Fi access for up to 10 devices to keep everyone connected.

Mechanically, though, the MY19 Ranger you see here is specific to the United States market, most obviously proven by the lack of a diesel.

Other optional safety systems include blind spot monitoring, lane assistance and adaptive cruise control. An electronically-locking rear differential will be available as an option, and offered as standard on the FX2 and FX4 off-road models. Trail Control will allow the driver to set and maintain a low vehicle speed (1-20 mph) while traveling through less-than ideal trails on the way to the next adventure. What are your thoughts on the 2019 Ford Ranger? Trail Control takes over acceleration and braking which helps send power and braking to each individual wheel to allow drivers to focus on steering along the course.
