Saudi allows women at football game for first time

Saudi women attend sports event for first time

The soccer match Friday between local teams Al-Ahli and Al-Batin in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah, was the first game to have women in the crowds.

When the first goal was scored during the soccer game in Saudi Arabia on Friday, a new noise joined the ruckus in the stands: the sound of women cheering. It is the first time that Saudi female citizens and families attended sporting events in the stadium.

It's the latest in a series of measures launched in 2017 to give women greater participation in public life in a society dominated by men under Islamist codes. Any woman caught doing anything "inappropriate" with their phone faces punishment.

Saudi authorities announced on October 30, lifting the ban on women entering sports stadiums, allowing them to attend events in three stadiums as of 2018. "I am very proud to be a witness of this massive change".

"Ittihad fans, male and female, are the support of this club, and success is not complete without them coming together to serve this historic entity", the club tweeted.

Bakharji said she always felt bitter when her brothers came home from stadiums to tell her about the excitement of watching football matches in person. "It's a day of happiness and joy".

Fatimah Baeshen, the first spokeswomen to work for the Saudi embassy in Washington, also commented on the historic move.

"As we speak; Saudi women fans are entering soccer stadiums! I'm rooting for the ladies - enjoy!"

But these rules have begun to change under King Salman, who became the Saudi monarch in 2015, and are driven by his son, Mohammed bin Salman (32), the country's crown prince. Many women excited about the new ability to watch live games - as well as men opposed to this - took to social media on Friday, writing under the Arabic hashtags #FamiliesEnteringStadiums and #ThePeopleWelcomeWomenEnteringStadiums.

Saudi Arabia still has a long ways to go in terms of boosting women's empowerment, but progress, no matter how slow it comes, is progress.
