A 7.3 magnitude quake shook southern Peru on Sunday, killing at least two people and injuring 65 others, the South American country's civil defence agency said.

The quake struck at around 04.20am local time, 40 kilometers to the south of Acari.

The natural disaster hit the coast of the South American country which sits on the dreaded Ring of Fire, an area in the Pacific Ocean prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

INDECI also said that 65 had been injured in the quake.

"The victim reportedly found in Bella Union has not been confirmed", Chavez said. He had said earlier that 17 people were missing as the mine, east of Chala, suffered damages after the quake.

Several municipalities were without electricity, and many roads and adobe houses had collapsed, Osorio said.

The last major quake to shake Peru hit in August 2007, killing 595 people.

In 2007 an natural disaster killed hundreds in the region of Ica.

The natural disaster which caused minor material damage had triggered temporary tsunami warnings along the Peruvian coast.

The 7.3 magnitude quake with an epicentre in Lomas, Arequipa region, struck on Sunday leading to fears a tsunami would follow.

There have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

According to Peru's Geophysical Institute (IGP), the seismic event struck the coast of Arequipa Sunday at 4:18 AM. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said tsunami waves are possible within 300 kilometers of the epicenter along the coast of Peru.
