Warning of ballistic missile inbound to Hawaii a 'false alarm'

People in Hawaii are freaking out over 'impending ballistic missile' text

Emergency alerts sent Saturday to Hawaiians warning of a "ballistic missile threat" were reportedly false, officials said.

Authorities quickly issued followups to calm the no doubt panicking populace, but I imagine it's hard to do that properly when you've just told everyone in the state to seek shelter and lie on the floor.

"There is no missile threat or danger to the State of Hawaii".

Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard was among the first to confirm on Twitter that the alert was mistakenly sent out, and there was no threat of a missile.

It was some 30 minutes after the alert that the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency confirmed the missile threat was non-existent.

Gabbard said she has not heard any specifics that have gone on since the initial warning tweet was released, but she does think most people are relieved to hear the threat was not real. "Prior message was sent in blunder".

The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission meanwhile tweeted that the FCC is launching an investigation into how the false emergency alert was sent.

"There is nothing more important to Hawai'i than professionalizing and fool-proofing this process", Sen.

"I think it depends on the carrier", he said, "what is the carrier or the company that sponsors that, but we'll review that too, because all of them should have gotten this". "Repeat. False Alarm", the message read.

While the message caused worry via web-based networking media, the Hawaii Office of Emergency Management immediately reacted on Twitter, saying, "NO rocket risk to Hawaii". Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii. "There was anxiety across the state and it was terrifying".

"This system we have been told to rely upon failed and failed miserably today".

"There needs to be tough and quick accountability and a fixed process", he wrote.

The U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, was the target of the surprise attack by Japan on December 7, 1941, that drew the United States into World War Two.
