Trump scraps February London visit

Trump Vetoed His Trip To London Amid Fears Of City-Stopping Protests

He announced the decision in a midnight tweet amid reports in Britain that a Trump visit would be met with protests.

United States president Donald Trump said late on Thursday he no longer plans to attend the opening of a new USA embassy in London. Trump blamed the Obama administration for the move, accusing it of selling the old embassy for "peanuts" in a "bad deal".

The cancelled visit comes after a raft of British MPs urged British Prime Minister Theresa May to cancel his appearance following Trump's tweets in support of far-right extreme group Britain First at the end of a year ago.

Though Trump criticized Obama for the USA embassy location, the decision to move out of the Mayfair section of London was set in 2008 under the George W. Bush administration.

Trump's comments come amid reports in British media that the White House was anxious about mass protests during the president's visit.

He concluded: "Let's hope that Donald Trump also revisits the pursuit of his divisive agenda".

Then Mr Johnson tweeted: "The US is the biggest single investor in the United Kingdom - yet Khan & Corbyn seem determined to put this crucial relationship at risk".

The London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, said on Friday that Trump had clearly "got the message" that many Londoners would not welcome his visit.

The U.S. presence on Grosvenor Square goes back to the late 18th century, when future president John Adams was the first U.S. envoy to England.

Donald Trump won't be opening the new us embassy in London in February. He's been to countries all over the world and yet he's not been to the one with whom he's closest.

But the USA is far from the only embassy to have clocked up millions in unpaid congestion fees. Washington had considered upgrading the existing facility, but ultimately decided that tougher physical security standards would be easier to meet by constructing a new building.

In December Ambassador Woody Johnson said he was looking forward to welcoming the president when he visited, adding: "I think he will be very impressed with this building and the people who occupy it".

Although the decision was not made under Obama, Trump is correct to say that the sale of the embassy was completed during the Obama administration.

Johnson, a Trump appointee, also said the new embassy was entirely paid for by the sale of other London properties and "did not cost the US taxpayer a cent". "It opens to the public on January 16".

Since then, however, the president has indicated he does not want to take up the invitation if he is going to face mass demonstrations and it had been expected he could make a low-key working visit rather than a trip which involved all the trappings of a state occasion.
