AT&T has been pressed to give up the deal after 18 US Senate and US Intelligence Committee members have signed a letter to regulators expressing concerns about Chinese companies' engagement in the US telecommunications sector.
Huawei's legal victory comes days after it was dealt a setback in its efforts to expand sales in the USA when, according to media reports, a planned deal to sell handsets phones through AT&T fell through.
Both AT&T and Huawei declined to comment, the Journal reported.
By focusing on the need for free and fair competition, Yu avoided being dragged into a discussion of his company's alleged close relationship with the Chinese military and security concerns, aired by some U.S. lawmakers, about its products. He explained the problem the company has been having with USA carriers, which could have been sparked by AT&T's sudden withdrawal of their deal.
Huawei planned to announce Tuesday at a Las Vegas trade show it had struck an agreement to sell its smartphones through AT&T Inc. "For Huawei, we have passion to do more", Yu said.
"The U.S. market presents unique challenges for Huawei, and while the HUAWEI Mate 10 Pro will not be sold by U.S. carriers, we remain committed to this market now and in the future", it said.
Huawei is since years under USA government scrutiny, with claims of spying for the Chinese government with their products.
Then along comes the Huawei Mate 10, a smartphone that's very almost as much of a flagship as any of those phones. It may be hard to find another U.S. mobile operator to carry its products. "Sometimes that's good for consumers and business; sometimes it is not", the partner said. This reflects not only the dynamism of Chinese companies and their growing strength as they have moved up the value chain, but also the increasingly prominent economic competition between the two countries. They may even have to sacrifice some of their own corporate tenets to abide by the rules of the game.
The US continually criticises China for not opening its market wider and not providing a level playing field for foreign companies.
