"Bomb Cyclone" Winter Storm Explodes Over The East Coast

More than a dozen dead as powerful blizzard batters US east coast

This Nor'easter is expected to "bomb" out by Thursday afternoon just off the coast of New England.

The storm is particularly strong because of a weather phenomenon known as "bombogenesis", a system that undergoes rapid strengthening within 24 hours.

The massive Nor'easter is expected to slam the Boston area with anywhere from 8 inches to a foot of snow.

In New York City, according to the National Weather Bureau, temperatures should reach 4C (40F) next week.

New England is expected to feel the brunt of this winter storm on Thursday. Ground temperatures are exceptionally cold. More than three-fourths of all flights in or out of New York City are either canceled or delayed, the flight-tracking site says. Highs will push toward the 30-degree mark.

U.S. Sen. Tim Scott made a decision to have some fun with the weather, tweeting video of himself being pulled along in the snow behind a vehicle while he knelt on a boogie board.

If you're wondering whether that term was only created to make you pay attention to the weather, you're not alone. At the DE and Jersey shore, they could be looking at half a foot of snow, while in the Philly suburbs we may get by with just a coating to an inch or so.

What is unique about this storm, though, is that it is developing so far south, Jackson said. "That's the most unusual thing about this storm".

While many outages were restored by the day's end, officials from the mid-Atlantic to New England warned that those numbers might climb again as strong wind gusts and frigid temperatures continue through Saturday. That's just what this storm will do through Thursday. Part II will feature howling winds and the coldest temperatures of the winter so far. While downtown temperatures stayed in the teens Wednesday morning, temperatures in the suburbs hit single digit lows.

Forecasters said hurricane-force winds blowing offshore on Thursday could generate 24ft seas. The state of New Hampshire could be colder than Mars, with a forecasted low of -35° F on Mount Washington (vs. a high of -2°F on that other planet).

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency in response to the impending storm on Wednesday afternoon and urged Virginians to prepare.

Saturday 's temperatures will creep back up into the teens in NY and Philadelphia, only to plunge to 5 degrees after the sun sets, though the NWS expects winds to subside. Travel conditions can go downhill fast, especially east of town where snow may fall periodically at a moderate to heavy rate. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. But small shifts to the west could bring some snow to these cities. Accumulations of 3-5in were possible in eastern North Carolina.

And in Hartford, Connecticut, a brutal cold of 10 degrees yielded a wind chill of minus 20.

Gusts of up to 76 miles per hour and 75 miles per hour were reported Thursday on Nantucket and Cape Cod, respectively.

The Northeast will experience some of the coldest temperatures in decades on Friday and Saturday as a "cold weather bomb" bears down on the region.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 6.
