Japan Pledges $3 Million To Myanmar For Rohingya Return

Japan conveys concern over Rohingya to Myanmar’s Suu Kyi

The Myanmar military's involvement in the deaths of 10 Rohingya Muslims in northern Rakhine State, admitted by the commander-in-chief, is just a fraction of the abuses for which security forces are culpable, rights groups say.

"The United States is deeply disappointed by today's court decision in Burma to allow prosecution of Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo under the Official Secrets Act", according to a US State Department statement received here this morning.

"It is true that both the villagers and security forces admitted they killed the 10 Bengali terrorists", the military statement said.

The military claimed they had rushed to Inn Din to protect frightened Buddhist villagers and had been attacked by "200 Bengalis" with sticks and swords, 10 of whom were arrested and accused of having links to terrorists. Previous internal inquiries have cleared the military of wrongdoing in Rakhine state, where an extensive campaign of violence has driven more than 650,000 Rohingya refugees into Bangladesh.

"Action will be taken against the villagers. and the security force members who violated the rules of engagement according to the law", the statement said.

The Rohingya people have been previously targeted during 1999 and 2012, and the Karenni people suffered a similar fate when their villages were burned and they faced massive killings that forced them to flee to Thailand.

Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director of Human Rights Watch, urged the Myanmar government to "get serious about accountability by allowing the UN-appointed Fact Finding Commission to enter the country".

In a rare admission of guilt, the Defence Ministry released a statement on Facebook stating its forces had killed 10 suspected terrorists in the Inn Din village of Maung Daw on September 1.

Although the Rohingya consider themselves an ethnic minority of Myanmar, numerous Buddhist majority consider them illegal foreigners from Bangladesh.

Angry ethnic Rakhine Buddhist villagers, who had lost relatives in militant attacks, wanted to kill the captives, and stabbed them after forcing them into a grave on the outskirts of the village.

The military investigation was led by Lieutenant General Aye Win.

Four members of the security forces also opened fire.

Amnesty International described the statement as "a sharp departure from the army's policy of blanket denial of any wrongdoing".

The U.N. and other groups accuse the military of widespread atrocities against Rohingya, including killings, rapes and the burning of homes.
