Most daily smokers get hooked after first cigarette, study finds

More than 60 percent who try a cigarette become daily smokers study says

The study, compiled by researchers in London, found that if you smoke even a single cigarette, you're depressingly likely to go through a serious smoking phase.

"The majority of people who try a cigarette go on to become regular smokers for at least some period of time, according to new research".

They said that the study, published in the journal Nicotine And Tobacco Research, provides support for reducing cigarette experimentation among teenagers.

He points out that the conversion rate from "first time smoker" to "daily smoker" is very high, and thus, the study confirms the importance of preventing cigarette experimentation in the first place.

Research gathered from 215,000 survey participants in the U.S., U.K, Australia and New Zealand showed 60.3 percent of people had tried smoking cigarettes, and of those who tried it, an estimated 68.9 percent picked up a daily habit.

They revealed 17.7% of men are current smokers compared with 14.1% of women, with men smoking an average 12 cigarettes daily and women 11 per day. "We recently launched a new tobacco control plan to map the path to a smoke-free generation and are working to educate people about the risks and support them to quit for good". Among them, almost 68.9% reported that they had progressed to smoking daily.

The different surveys used different methodologies and yielded different results, so the estimated 68.9 per cent "conversion rate" from experimentation to daily smoking has a margin of error (between 60.9 and 76.9 per cent).

But Professor Hajek, who has provided consultancy for and received research funding from makers of stop-smoking medications, said this instant addiction did not appear to apply to e-cigarettes.

"It is possible that somebody who is a lifetime non-smoker did try a cigarette when they were a kid but it didn't make any impression on them, and they forgot it or don't see that it is important enough to report", said Hajek. So it is just an estimation, and also there is lack of accuracy of people's recall of their smoking history in this study, the lead author informed. It has been proven that the rate of becoming a smoker after experiencing smoking for the first time is higher than expected.

'The presence of nicotine is clearly not the whole story'.

In 2016, 15.8% of adults smoked - equivalent to around 7.6 million people.
