Four-Year-Old Boy Dies From The Flu In Ohio

Ohio Department of Health reports first child flu death of season

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona's record surge of flu cases is crowding clinics, doctors' offices and hospital emergency rooms statewide, health officials said Wednesday. The organization didn't release any further information about the victims' medical history.

Riley says he remembers the last time there was an outbreak at a school a couple years back, explaining parents pulled not only the sick kids away from school, but the healthy ones.

Matt Maurer, the epidemiologist for Coconino County, holds a vial of influenza vaccine at the county health department in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Use a tissue to cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing; avoid using your hands, but if you do, immediately wash or use antibacterial cleanser to help prevent germs from spreading.

Locally, Jeanetta Francy with the Allen County Health Department says that they've seen 62 hospitalizations in the county alone this season, and with the ODH reporting that the first pediatric flu death for 2017 - 2018 has happened in Montgomery County, the flu is something to take seriously.

A report from the state health department shows 16 of the deaths occurred among people age 65 or older and seven other deaths in the 50 to 64 age group. "You can still get the flu, no vaccine is flawless". Some protection is better than none, and the flu may be less severe in people who have been vaccinated.

While no vaccine is a 100-percent guarantee the receiver will not get sick, health departments are recommending the shot anyway because it should lessen the severity of the symptoms no matter what strain you get, he added. Residents with questions should contact their health care provider.

Last week it reported that as of December 30, there have been 13 reported cases of influenza-related intensive care unit admission.

The 2017-18 flu season in OH and nationally is looking similar to what was seen during the 2014-15 flu season which at the time was the most severe flu season in recent years, according to the (CDC).

Complications of flu can include bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma or diabetes. However, a second wave of influenza will often cause illnesses after the first.

It said, in case of mild fever with sore throat with or without bodyache, headache, diarrhoea and vomiting, the patient neither requires Oseltamivir nor testing.
