Couple accused of murdering four-year-old captured in Georgia

Candice Renea Diaz 24 and her boyfriend Brad Edward Fields 28 are accused of torturing and killing a 4-year-old girl

A manhunt is underway for a MI woman and her boyfriend charged in the death of the woman's 4-year-old daughter, who suffered injuries that included severe burns on her arms and legs.

At the time, the girl's mother told police the boyfriend was experiencing a suicidal outburst, and had assaulted her, shot a dog and shot himself, the TV station reports. Police believed they were the prime suspects in the case.

Anyone with information about their whereabouts is asked to call the U.S. Marshals' Fugitive Apprehension Team's 24-hour Detroit-based hotline at 313-234-5656 or the Sumter Township Police Department at 734-461-4833, ext. 305.

Wayne County prosecutors have charged Candice Diaz, 24, the little girl's mother, and Brad Edward Fields, 28, with the preschooler's stomach-turning murder. Fields also has been charged as a habitual offender. Grandfather Jerry Barrett noted that it was hard to grieve because the family could not put her to rest.

The girl was later identified as Gabrielle Barrett. Diaz is the biological mother of the child. Diaz faces murder, child abuse and torture charges. "Everybody's been broken up about it", he said.

Police responded to a 911 call around 10:45 a.m. on January 1 for an unresponsive 4-year-old girl. Responding officers noted the child had "obvious severe burns about her extremities".

She later died at the hospital. The Washtenaw County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the girl's death a homicide two days later.

A manhunt is underway for the couple, who may be in a black 2002 Chevy Cavalier, with MI license plate number, DTR 1854.

Mugshots released Monday by Sumpter Township police officials appear to stem from charges filed against both Fields and Diaz following that incident.

It wasn't the first time police had been at the home, Local 4 reports. Fields was arrested on domestic violence charges but Diaz later told police she didn't want to press charges.

Leah Barrett said her family is heartbroken over the loss, but feels better knowing Diaz and Fields have been found and arrested.

Diaz was able to escape to the community clubhouse to call police, according to the report.
