Nikki Haley Defends Trump Tweet Comparing Nuclear Button Sizes With North Korea

Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon South Korea's chief delegate to the first high-level inter Korean talks in more than two years reports to work at his office in downtown Seoul on Jan. 8 2018 the eve of the planned meeting at the border villag

The extension comes a day before the North and South are due to meet for official talks, in what will be the first high-level contact between the two countries in more than two years.

The South Korean government on Tuesday will announce its official view on the previous administration's 2015 deal with Japan meant to resolve the issue of wartime "comfort women", with several diplomatic sources saying Seoul will call on Tokyo to voluntarily take additional action.

With only a handful of qualified winter sports athletes, analysts say North Korea is likely to send significant numbers of cheerleaders to the Pyeongchang Games, which run from February 9 to 25.

South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) will discuss issues of mutual concern, including military and humanitarian issues which South Korea raised previous year, during the upcoming high-level talks, Seoul's Unification Ministry said Monday. It needs to receive an additional quota to compete, and its International Olympic Committee representative, Chang Ung, headed to Switzerland over the weekend for talks with IOC officials, according to Japanese media.

South Korean officials say they will focus in the talks on Olympic cooperation before moving onto more hard political and military issues.

When high-ranking North Korean figures visited Incheon to attend the Asian Games in October 2014, Chun was the South Korean government official sent to meet them.

Trump, who a year ago lambasted his chief diplomat for talking about negotiations with the nuclear-armed North, told reporters at Camp David that some dialogue or direct conversation with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was not beyond the realm of possibility.

In recent weeks, Trump and Kim have traded barbs about their arsenals and the "nuclear button" on their desks, raising fears the two countries could be drawing closer to war. The Japanese government plans to reject any additional demands by South Korea on the topic. The DPRK accepted it without any change of the dialogue venue and time that South Korea had proposed. But Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has insisted the delay is a practical necessity to accommodate the Olympics, not a political gesture. North Korea's chief negotiator is Ri Son-gwon, chairman of North Korea's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland (CPRF), another veteran negotiator who has represented the North at a variety of military talks and both working-level and high-level talks with South Korea.

Analysts say tensions could flare again after the Olympics, with US and South Korean troops carrying out their delayed drills, and North Korea likely responding with new weapons tests.

After taking office last May, Moon ordered that a task force re-examine the process that led to the agreement, saying the majority of South Koreans did not approve of it.
