JFK woes 'unacceptable — Airport agency head

The passengers on the Kuwait-bound flight were booked into hotels and will be rescheduled on different flights

Their frustration, which spilt over to social media, was echoed by politicians pressing for change at the airport and its operator, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, which in a statement late on Sunday called the weekend's events "unacceptable" and said it will investigate. The Port Authority blamed "cascading" issues that included the large numbers of holiday travellers, difficulties in baggage handling and staff shortages.

Officials at the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey apologized to travelers Monday and said they would investigate the cause of a water main break that flooded a busy global terminal at John F. Kennedy Airport, causing delays for thousands of passengers.

More delays have been added Sunday to the storm-related aftermath the already beleaguered airport is working to recover from.

Its executive director, Rick Cotton, says investigators want to know why an internal pipe was not weather protected and whether any other failures contributed to the break on Sunday afternoon.

The terminal was accepting no worldwide arrivals for much of the afternoon, but around 7:45 p.m. ET, the airport said it was resuming operations.

The Port Authority of NY and New Jersey says passengers who have already arrived are being taken to other terminals for processing. That sent approximately three inches of water into the terminal's west end.

Even before the water main break, the Port Authority issued a statement on Sunday on how the recovery from severe weather had disrupted the airport.

Abrams video showed water on the ground in the arrivals area of the terminal and the chaos as travelers attempted a mass exodus from the airport.

QUEENS -JFK is nearly back to normal - and that means long lines, delayed flights and thousands of frustrated passengers.

The airport was experiencing arrival delays of more than two hours.
