Man dead and woman injured after Stockholm metro station blast

A Swedish policeman searches the area outside a Stockholm metro station

An object now believed to be a hand grenade blew up after a 60-year-old man picked it up from the ground, leaving him in a serious condition.

Police in Sweden say a man has been seriously injured after an explosion at a Stockholm subway station.

He died after being taken to hospital and a 45-year-old woman also suffered minor wounds to her face and both legs.

The man was taken the hospital but his injuries proved fatal.

Police cordoned off the station and the square where the blast happened as the bomb squad moved in to investigate.

Alvarsjo said Swedish police have "unfortunately" noticed a rise in the use of hand grenades by criminal groups in the Nordic country. "Nothing indicates that the (injured) couple were targeted", said Olsson, adding there was nothing to suggest an act of terrorism.

"We're suspecting that it's a hand grenade of some sort, " Lars Alvarsjo, chief of Stockholm's southern police district, told the Swedish national broadcaster SVT.

"I heard a huge bang", one local resident told Swedish paper Aftonbladet.

The incident occurred at about 11:00 hours, local time, and the police immediately closed the station.
