Letterman Nabs Obama as First Guest for New Netflix Show

US President Barack Obama applauds alongside former talk show host David Letterman during a celebration of the 5th anniversary of Joining Forces and the 75th anniversary of the USO at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland

Obama will join Letterman on January 12 for the launch of the new "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman" on Netflix.

Former President Barack Obama is scheduled to give his first post-White House interview in the US next week on David Letterman's new Netflix show.

David Letterman is returning to late night-and he's bringing some big names with him.

Letterman's interview with Obama will mark the former president's first television talk show appearance since he left office in January a year ago.

The people he refers to include President Barack Obama, 30 Rock's Tina Fey, ER alum George Clooney, Jay-Z, Howard Stern and Malala Yousafzai, each of whom will appear in one installment of the six-episode first season. He then moved to CBS, where The Late Show With David Letterman aired from 1993 to 2015. Interviews will be supplemented by field segments that aim to quench Letterman's "curiosity and desire to dig deeper on a specific topic related to the iconic guest", according to Netflix.

The in-studio and outside of the studio interview series is set to be "intimate, in-depth, and far reaching", but it will be mixed in with the humor that fans have come to expect from Letterman.

News of the series was first announced in August. He ended a storied 33-year run in late-night TV that began with his 1982-1993 residency on NBC's "Late Night".

This is the first time Letterman has led a series in over two years.
