Cancer Death Rates Fall: Here's Why

The cancer death rate in the US has dropped 26 percent since 1991.

'This new report reiterates where cancer control efforts have worked, particularly the impact of tobacco control, ' said Dr Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society.

It takes more than a year to collate death certificates and analyze the data on cancer deaths.

More than one-third of all men and women in the United States will develop cancer during their lifetimes, but not every cancer diagnosis is an immediate death sentence.

In 2018, 1,735,350 new cancer cases and 609,640 cancer deaths are projected to occur in the USA, the report found. From 2014 to 2015, of the 10 leading causes of death, only cancer declined.

The most common cancers - in men, tumors of the prostate; in women, breast - are not the most common causes of cancer death.

Cancer is still a destructive blight on American society, however, and is estimated to have killed 158.6 per 1,000 people diagnosed with the disease in 2015.

Over about a quarter-century, the death rate has fallen 26 percent, bringing about very almost 2.4 million less passings than if crest rates had proceeded.

Deaths due to prostate cancer were more than halved between 1989 and 2015, declining 52 percent.

Among Americans more youthful than 65, the death rate was just about a third higher among blacks than whites - with considerably bigger variations in many states.

"The decline in cancer mortality over the past two decades is primarily the result of steady reductions in smoking and advances in early detection and treatment", the report reads. In 2015, the percent shows a fall of 1.7 percent. The cancer death rate was 14% higher in non-Hispanic blacks than non-Hispanic whites; the racial disparity was larger for those aged 65 years (death rate ratio, 1.31) than those aged ≥65 years (death rate ratio, 1.07).

A woman has a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer over her lifetime; a man has a 1 in 9 chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer, the American Cancer Society says.

"Black women get breast cancer, on average, five to seven years younger than white women, so our cancers are detected later, and when they're more advanced", Goler Blount said.

Cancer also continues to affect men and women differently.
