Flier assaulted woman with wife in next seat

Man Charged With Sexually Assaulting Sleeping Woman On Flight To Detroit

In yet another shocking incident that highlights the brazenness of men who sexually harass women in a public space, a 34-year-old Indian man was arrested in the United States for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman passenger who was seated next to him on a flight.

The man, Prabhu Ramamoorthy, who prosecutors said was an Indian national living in the United States on a temporary visa, was charged with aggravated sexual abuse and held without bail after an appearance in federal court in MI on Thursday.

According to the Detroit Free Press report, the woman has accused Ramamoorthy of putting his hand in her trousers and unbuttoning her shirt while she was sleeping against the window.

She immediately told a flight attendant and Prabhu Ramamoorthy was taken into custody in Romulus, Mich. when the flight landed. Additionally, he told authorities that he attempted to put his finger in her vagina "but was not successful", according to the complaint obtained by the paper.

Ramamoorthy was arrested at Detroit's Metro Airport.

Federal prosecutors allege the man accused of sexually abusing a sleeping woman aboard a Detroit-bound flight attacked her while his wife sat in the next seat. The female traveler then noticed that both her shirt and trousers had been undone.

The woman revealed she nodded off and woke up "to a turn in her jeans and saw that her jeans and shirt were unfastened", as per the government grumbling. Jill Leslie Price of the Federal Defender Office, who showed up with Ramamoorthy, said he was eager to have his nation of origin told of the charge.

Prabhu's wife, meanwhile, told a similar sequence of events and said that they had called the flight attendants to change their seats as well.

Both Ramamoorthy and his wife gave lengthier statements later indicating that the pill Ramamoorthy had taken was "plain Tylenol".

The horrific incident happened while the victim was asleep against the plane window.

Magistrate Judge Steven Whalen, who said it was a "very unusual case", ordered Ramamoorthy to be held pending trial after Jawad successfully argued that he was a flight risk and a potential danger to others around him.

"There's been no allegations from anywhere that his behavior has ever been inappropriate prior to this incident", O'Neill said.

Stephen Schuler, a spokesman for Spirit Airlines, said Thursday the company is fully cooperating with law enforcement and referred all questions to them.
