1 dead, 19 tourists injured in Egypt hot air balloon crash

Officials confirmed the death of a South African woman

A citizen of the United States who was in the balloon at the time reportedly died in the incident.

A sightseeing balloon carrying foreign tourists over Luxor in Egypt has crash landed on Friday.

At least 12 people were also injured in the accident and have been hospitalized.

"I feel lucky to have walked out of this traumatic experience, a scary freak accident", she wrote.

Egyptian authorities blamed strong winds, saying they had blown the balloon off its course and into a mountainous area.

The tourist killed in the hot air balloon accident Friday in Luxor, Egypt, was a South African woman and not a US citizen, as previously reported by Egyptian media.

Luxor governor Mahmoud Badr confirmed Friday's accident, adding that he was checking on the wellbeing of passengers at a local hospital, AFP news agency reports.

Luxor has suffered a series of hot air balloon accidents.

Sixteen people were injured in a Luxor hot air balloon flight in 2011 as well.

Balloon rides are monitored by cameras and banned from flying above 2,000 meters.
