Total Dead In Iran Anti-Government Protests Rises To 19; 450 Arrested

White House Urges World-Wide Support for Iran Protesters

Unsigned statements on social media urged Iranians to demonstrate again in Tehran and 50 other towns and cities.

Rouhani finally broke his silence on the protests that mark the biggest test for the regime since mass protests in 2009.

Rouhani addressed the nation in his first comments since antigovernment unrest began Thursday, in the largest protests since an uprising over disputed election results shook the nation in 2009.

Netanyahu's remarks on Monday followed comments by Rouhani, who on Sunday accused the United States and its two close allies, Israel and Saudi Arabia, of fuelling the recent unrest in Iran, Xinhua news agency reported. It must be remembered that Iran is an Islamic state where it is seen as particularly blasphemous to criticise the supreme ruler, who holds complete authority. He sought a conciliatory tone, saying that government bodies "should provide space for legal criticism and protest" and calling for greater transparency and a more balanced media.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has said, it is time for a change in Iran. "Iran, the Number One State of Sponsored Terror with numerous violations of Human Rights occurring on an hourly basis, has now closed down the Internet so that peaceful demonstrators can not communicate".

"I wish the Iranian people success in their noble quest for freedom", Netanyahu said in a video posted on his Facebook page.

The Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper reported that the law enforcement agencies had arrested almost 400 people in Iran, including 200 in Tehran, for taking part in the protests.

Conservative news agency Fars said Tehran shops had closed on Sunday "for fear of damage to their shops by rioters". Officials initially said protesters would "pay the price" for the "illegal gatherings".

"The spreading of violence, fear and terror will definitely be confronted", he added.

Iranian protesters chant slogans at a rally in Tehran on Sunday.

Since then, people have repeatedly taken to the streets to protest against unemployment, poverty, and the rising cost of living.

Brig. Gen. Massoud Jazayeri, the Guard commander and deputy chief of staff for Iran's military, said Monday that Trump's support of the protesters "indicates planning by the US for launching a new sedition in Iran".

Rouhani also stressed Monday that Iran 'has seen many similar events and passed them easily'.

The total number of arrests from the protests around the country remained unclear.

From the capital, Tehran, to Kermanshah in the west and the holy city of Qom in the north, Iranians defied police to vent frustration against a government that allows limited space for political dissent. They deny shooting the two men killed in Dorud, and information has been hard to obtain amid a near-total media blackout.

Iran is a major OPEC oil producer and regional power deeply involved in Syria and Iraq as part of a battle for influence with rival Saudi Arabia. Protesters have complained mostly about economic problems and have also denounced Iran's clerical leadership.
