Stats: 2017 Was Safest Year for Air Travel on Record

Fact Check Trump Can't Claims Credit for Zero Aviation Deaths

Airlines recorded zero accident deaths in commercial passenger jets last year, according to a Dutch consulting firm and an aviation safety group that tracks crashes, making 2017 the safest year on record for commercial air travel.

It has been over two years since a crash killed more than 100 people, when a Russian passenger plane was brought down by a bomb in Egypt's Sinai peninsula on October 31, 2015. That number is in times less than the 16 fatal incidents in 2016, in which 303 people lost their lives. "2017 was the safest year for aviation ever", said Adrian Young of To70.

Aviation consultancy To70 also reported the record, saying it was much better than could reasonably and statistically be expected. No fatal accidents involving a British airline have happened since the 1980s.

The To70 report used data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) which is to issue its own annual report soon.

The low number of accidents comes as no surprise, according to ASN President Harro Ranter: "Since 1997 the average number of airliner accidents has shown a steady and persistent decline, for a great deal thanks to the continuing safety-driven efforts by global aviation organisations such as ICAO, IATA, Flight Safety Foundation and the aviation industry".

"Whilst the safety levels of modern civil passenger airplanes remain high, the extraordinarily low accident rate this year must be seen as a case of good fortune", it said.

He tweeted: ' Since taking office I have been very strict on Commercial Aviation.

But Trump was probably referring only to statistics for turbojets, as there were two deadly U.S. accidents in ASN data past year.

US President Donald Trump boards Air Force One in West Palm Beach, Florida with First Lady Melania Trump and son Barron Trump en route to Washington.

The Aviation Safety Network said 2017 was "the safest year ever, both by the number of fatal accidents as well as in terms of fatalities".
