Teen in custody after 4 found dead in New Jersey home

4 Family Members Killed in Shooting in New Jersey Sources

A 16-year-old is in custody after a horrific shooting just before midnight New Year's Eve in a Jersey Shore town.

A teenage boy in the U.S. state of New Jersey was in police custody Monday after being accused of gunning down his family on New Year's Eve with a semiautomatic rifle, authorities said.

The teen, whose name was not released because he is a juvenile, will be charged as an adult with four counts of murder and a weapons charge, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni said during a press conference in Long Branch.

They were identified as the teen's father, 44-year-old Steven Kologi; his 42-year-old mother Linda Kologi; his 18-year-old sister Brittany Kologi; and 70-year-old family acquaintance Mary Shultz of Ocean Township.

The suspect's brother and grandfather were uninjured in the attack, the prosecutor's office said. There was no immediate word on a motive for the killings. There was no history of domestic violence calls to the home, according prosecutors.

A neighbor said he heard gunshots and fireworks from two different locations in the neighborhood nearly simultaneously.

Though he lives on the same street as the family, he did not know them, he said.

The suspect, who has not been named, was arrested without incident, the statement said.
