Dawgs run wild: Georgia beats Oklahoma 54-48 in Rose Bowl

NORMAN OK – NOVEMBER 25 Running back Rodney Anderson

For the first time since the 1982 season, Georgia will play for a national title. It was the first Rose Bowl to go into overtime in history. Seibert responded with a 33-yard field goal for Oklahoma.

Score they did as Sony Michel capped his 181-yard night with a 27-yard touchdown run on the second play of the series. Heisman Trophy victor Baker Mayfield threw 41 touchdown passes en route to 4,340 yards through the air to help the Sooners average 44.9 points per contest, but Georgia - led by linebacker and Butkus Award victor Roquan Smith - has held opponents to 158.3 yards passing per game while giving up just 13.2 points per contest.

But as he had all game, Michel broke free.

Georgia will play in the national championship game January 8 in Atlanta against the victor of Monday night's Sugar Bowl matchup between top-ranked Clemson and No. 4 Alabama. The pass was intercepted by Dominick Sanders and returned for 39 yards to the Sooners' 4-yard line, setting up a Javon Wims TD reception to give the Dawgs their first lead of the game with 13:57 remaining. Only two teams in the previous 103 Rose Bowl Games had overcome a double-digit deficit at halftime - Alabama in 1926 and MI in 1989. Senior running back Nick Chubb added 145 yards and two touchdowns, one of them on a 50-yard run.

Georgia forced the Sooners into two 3-and-outs to begin the second half, holding the Sooners to just 29 yards in the third quarter while dominating offensively.

The Sooners outgained the Bulldogs, 531 yards to 527, and led 24-21 in first downs and 32:58-27:02 in time of possession.

The matchup was determined by the final College Football Playoff rankings, which are made by a 13-member committee of five former coaches, four athletic directors, two former administrators, a college president and a former sports reporter.

Georgia is going to the national championship game. Atlantic Coast Conference champion Clemson was ranked first and Alabama fourth.
