Single Muslim women keen for Haj pilgrimage must get preference: PM

Time to transform from ‘Positive India’

In his monthly radio address "Mann ki baat", the prime minister said removal of the restriction of having a male guardian or "mahram" may appear as a "small thing", but such issues "have a far reaching impact on our image as a society".

Stressing on gender equality, PM Modi said that his government has done away with the requirement of a male guardian accompanying a Muslim woman to Hajj.

He also said: "It is now time that a system is created where newest development opportunities are easily accessible for the youth of New India as they turn 18", assured Modi in his radio address.

Keeping a focused approach to empower women in general and especially the Muslim women, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said "single Muslim women" keen for going to Haj pilgrimage should be excluded from lottery system and given chance as "special category" case.

"New India needs to find ways, make plans regarding how we could accomplish our goals by 2022 and how we could build an India that our freedom fighters dreamt of", added PM Modi.

Highlighting the importance of voting, Prime Minister Modi said it is the biggest power granted by a democracy, as voters have the leverage to transform the nation. "The Indian democracy welcomes the voters of the 21st century, the "New India voters".

- New India will be free from poison of casteism, communalism, terrorism and corruption; free from dirt and poverty. "Why this discrimination?", Mr Modi said. The PM spoke about the "Swachh Survekshan 2018", which will be carried out from January 4 to March 10 next year to evaluate the cleanliness of India's urban areas. Those who are born in the year 2000 or later, they will start becoming voters from 1 January 2018.

PM Modi also said that it was time to transform the nation from "Positive India" to "Progressive India".

During his Mann Ki Baat address, the PM also mentioned that head of all 10 ASEAN countries will be the chief guests at the Republic Day celebrations which is a matter of great pride for India. ASEAN completed its 50 years of formation in 2017 and in 2017, 25 years of India's partnership with ASEAN was completed.
