New Year's Eve celebrations kick off as world welcomes in 2018

Countries such as New Zealand, Australia and Japan are among the first ones on the globe to welcome in 2018. New Zealand's time is 7.30 hours ahead of India, so for the first time every year the New Year celebrations start right here.

A giant digital clock on the tower was counting down before multi-colored fireworks exploded across the city skyline.

Meanwhile, Australians are welcoming 2018 with a rainbow-themed fireworks in Sydney. Sydney fireworks wowed the crowds around the harbour which was jammed to capacity by midnight.

Many cities around the world have stepped up security for New Year's Eve celebrations, especially looking at the major terror attacks around the world.

Bells will be rung and prayers offered at temples in Beijing, but the Gregorian calendar's New Year's celebrations are typically muted in China compared to the Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival.

In Japan, people celebrated the arrival the of the Year of the Dog, eating New Year's food such as noodles, shrimp and sweet black beans and praying for peace and good fortune.
