George Weah Wins Liberian Presidential Run-off Election

Vote count underway in Liberia's presidential election

Former footballer George Weah is set to become Liberia's president at the second attempt.

As news of Mr Weah's victory emerged on Thursday, his supporters began celebrating in the capital Monrovia.

The commission said with 98.1% of ballots cast, Weah garnered 61.5 percent of the total votes while Boakai got 38.5 percent.

Mrs Sirleaf defeated Mr Weah in the presidential election run-off in 2005, after the end of a brutal civil war.

Weah will succeed incumbent President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf next month in what will be Liberia's first democratic transition since 1944.

And although Weah's numbers did drop from 88.3 percent to 74.9 percent, he still remains a clear favourite in the area despite running with Howard-Taylor at his side.

Weah, who also won FIFA World Player of the Year in 1995 and Afircan Player of the Year three times, won 12 of the 15 counties during the election, according to The Mirror.

Weah entered politics after his retirement from football in 2002 and is now a senator in Liberia's parliament.

51-year-old Weah played in top European football teams including Monaco, Paris Saint Germain, AC Milan, Chelsea, Manchester City and Marseille and also represented the Liberian National team from 1987 to 2003.

Liberia, founded by freed United States slaves in the 19th Century, has not had a smooth transfer of power from one elected president to another since 1944.

Though voter turnout for Tuesday's runoff was low, Weah drew support from the younger generation, which makes up a majority of Liberia's population of 4.6 million people.

An estimated 250,000 people died during back-to-back civil wars in Liberia and the exiled Taylor is now serving a 50-year sentence in HMP Frankland in Durham, for war crimes in neighbouring Sierra Leone.
