U.S. missions in Turkey to resume full visa services after row

US announces full resumption of visa services in Turkey

The state department said it was "confident that the security posture has improved sufficiently".

Earlier, the US Embassy in Ankara said in a statement that the issuance of non-immigrant visas to Turkish citizens will be resumed in January 2019, Trend reports.

Later on Thursday, the Turkish Embassy in Washington, DC, which had also blocked some visa services for United States nationals, said it "welcome [d] the decision" by the USA and would end its own visa restrictions.

Thursday, the State Department said Turkey adhered to "high-level assurances" that there are no local employees under investigation, and that embassy consultants would not be arrested or detained.

Turkey, while announcing the end of restrictions on visas to USA citizens, took issue with the U.S. declaration.

The State Department says Turkey "adhered to the high-level assurances" that no other local employees are under investigation and that local staff of the USA embassy and consulate won't be arrested for doing their jobs.

Following this, the Embassy of Turkey in Washington announced the resumption of the process of issuing visas to USA citizens in response to a similar decision by the American side.

US officials said Thursday "serious concerns" remain about existing allegations against employees that were previously in Turkey.

"We do not find it right to misinform the Turkish and American publics by saying that assurances have been given", it said.

Washington had condemned the arrest of the consulate employee, a male Turkish citizen, as baseless and damaging to bilateral relations.

The tension in US-Turkish relations worsened after the October 4 detention of US Consul General in Istanbul Metin Topuz, a Turkish citizen, on suspicion of having links with the Turkish designated terrorist organization FETO headed by Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen.

The Turkish government wants the United States to extradite Gulen to Turkey, for his alleged involvement in the failed coup.
