Manchester City close to landing Southampton's Van Dijk

Liverpool have been linked with Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk

And Virgil van Dijk's arrival will bolster their defense, which has sometimes looked a bit shaky at times this season.

Van Dijk was a transfer target for Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in the last summer but it looked like Liverpool was ahead in the race.

The defender has fallen out of favour with current boss Mauricio Pellegrino due to his alleged lack of commitment to the club. And with the transfer window less than a week from opening it's doors, Virgil Van Dijk omission from the squad does fire up the transfer rumor mill.

His presence at the back might have done something to stem the tide, but Pellegrino again opted to leave the 26-year-old out of his matchday 18, as was the case for the weekend draw against Huddersfield Town after dropping him for the 1-0 loss to Chelsea.

Chelsea and Liverpool are also very keen on signing the Dutch worldwide, but as it stands City appear to be in pole position.

Van Dijk was omitted from the Southampton squad once more this afternoon at Tottenham, and Pellegrino briefly addressed the situation before kick-off at Wembley.

"We tried to do the best for the team".

According to The Telegraph, Manchester City are close to landing Southampton centre-back Virgil Van Dijk, for an 80 million euro fee (60 million pounds).

Liverpool desperately need to sign a new central defender in the winter transfer window if they are to challenge the best of teams in the UEFA Champions League KO stages and to finish in the top four in the PL again. "I am responsible for picking 11 players, and I intend to pick the best for the team".

A dominant leader at the back could have steadied the ship when Arsenal snatched a goal, but they folded like a deck of cards once more and it should have been the final trigger to sanction what would be a world record deal for a defender to get Van Dijk.
