Lalu convicted in fodder scam, but RJD blames 'regime'

Implications of guilty verdict for Lalu Prasad in second fodder scam case

Lalu Prasad will be lodged in Birsa Munda Central Jail, reported ANI.

In a huge blow to the Rashtriya Janata Dal, its national boss Lalu Prasad was on Saturday convicted in a Bihar fodder scam case involving fraudulent withdrawals of '90 lakh from Deogarh treasury between 1994 and 1996.

The CBI court will pronounce the quantum of sentence on Jan.3. The current case pertains to the alleged fraudulent withdrawal of 8.45 million rupees (132,000 US dollars) from a government treasury between 1994 and 1996. Lalu Prasad was Chief Minister of then undivided Bihar from 1990 to 1997.

He faces five cases in the fodder scam of which four are pending. Six, including former Bihar CM Jagannath Mishra, have been acquitted. There were false expense reports and delays in submissions, and the cumulative transfers amounted to Rs 900 crore approximately.

Mr Kaumudi, a 1986-batch IPS officer, handled the the fodder scam probe before he was transferred back to Andhra Pradesh in 1998.

"Lalu Prasad Yadav is even now politicizing the issue instead of accepting the verdict, just to deviate he is levelling allegations of conspiracy on BJP", Union Minister JP Nadda said. When he was convicted in 2013 in case RC 20-A/96, he was MP from Saran in Bihar.

The RJD leader said that the jail authorities might consider serving him home-cooked food. Lalu had got jail, while Mishra has got bail. "And whenever anyone from the lower hierarchy challenged this unjust order, they would be deliberately punished", he said. But Lalu had been assigned the railway ministry in the crucial UPA era, as a reward for RJD's staunch loyalty to the Sonia Gandhi-led coalition of secular parties, with Manmohan Singh as the prime minister. Jagannath Mishra, who was accompanied by his son and JD (U) leader Nitish Mishra, expressed gratitude to the judiciary for his acquittal, saying he had "absolutely no role" in the scam.
