Lakers' KCP taking part in whereas serving jail sentence

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

Last week, Caldwell-Pope's attorney, Jeffrey Lance Abood, told ESPN that the player had to return to California to begin an intensive, 25-day program that would result in some travel restrictions and could cause him to miss additional games.

According to official court documents, KCP will be serving his nearly month-long sentence at the Seal Beach Police Department Detention Center under a work release program, which will allow him to leave the facility to work - AKA play basketball for the Lakers - but not allow him to leave the state of California, meaning Pope will only be available for home games or games against the Warriors, Clippers, and Kings over the next 25 days. The detention stay is that program.

Pope pleaded guilty on December 13 to a violation of his DUI probation this summer.

Part of KCP's probation was to submit to random alcohol and drug screenings, according to the LA Times, Caldwell-Pope missed several of these tests, thus the jail sentence.

The probation stems from an incident during Caldwell-Pope's tenure with the Pistons when he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of allowing someone to operate his vehicle while under the influence.

Inmates at Seal Beach pay $100 a night for the privilege of staying there. Their cells have TVs with cable but are not in a different part of the jail. He signed a one-year deal for $18 million with the Lakers this offseason and is averaging 14.2 points, 5 rebounds and 2.2 assists.

"This is a legal matter, stemming from an incident that occurred last season while Kentavious was a member of another National Basketball Association team", the Lakers said in a statement on Saturday. He will, however, be permitted to play against the Warriors in Oakland on Friday.

The 6-foot-5 guard is now averaging 14.2 points, 5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists so far this season for Los Angeles.

Information from ESPN's Ramona Shelburne and Ohm Youngmisuk was used in this report.
