Trump advisers express midterm concerns in tense meeting

Steve Bannon said he'd consider running for President if Trump didn't seek reelection

The late-afternoon meeting - attended by White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly, counselor Kellyanne Conway, political director Bill Stepien, marketing and data specialist Brad Parscale, communications director Hope Hicks and political consultant and confidant Corey Lewandowski, among others - quickly became a griping session for Lewandowski and others about the way the White House manages the GOP and handles its planning for what is sure to be a hotly contested campaign season, people familiar with the meeting said.

Bannon said he blamed Alabama Sen. A Bannon spokesperson countered, "anyone around Steve since he left the White House can see he is very happy now out of the White House!" According to Bannon's account, Ivanka accused him of leaking stories to the press, to which he responded, "She's the queen of leaks". In both, Trump ultimately followed Bannon's tactical playbook-doubling down at all costs-with large success in the first instance and a highly questionable result in the second.

In October, Bannon called an adviser and said he would consider running for president if Trump doesn't run for re-election in 2020. Bannon's words are then said to have elicited a strong rebuke from Ivanka: "You're a fucking liar!"

Apparently Bannon would much rather have been cleaning up the PR mess regarding the revelation that the Islamophobic and homophobic candidate he backed in Alabama was said to have been banned from a local mall for preying on teenage girls. "One of the things I realized during the campaign is that, like in the military, it all comes down to one or two decisions in the heat of battle", he said.

Trump 'momentarily has lapses when he's convinced by people around him in the White House to do ridiculous things like support Big Luther Strange, another genius move by Jared, ' Bannon said. I think the establishment has to understand something.

Bannon recounted that conversation to Vanity Fair special correspondent Gabriel Sherman in a wide-ranging story focused on the Breitbart News executive chairman published Thursday.

Bannon called George W. Bush's the "most destructive presidency in history". A self-inflicted wound of massive proportions'.

'He's taking meetings with Russians to get additional stuff. "This tells you everything about Jared".

Kushner's attorney, Abbe Lowell, fired back at Bannon.

The relationship between Kushner and Bannon worsened through the spring.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) "has said privately that both chambers could be lost in November", Politico reported. Other advisers present outlined to the president what could be a hard year ahead and urged the White House to beef up its management of the political calendar and party efforts.
