State Dept: 8 Americans killed in Mexican tour bus crash

What We Know About Tour Bus Crash in Mexico

A tourist bus carrying cruise ship passengers in Mexico killed 12 people and hurt 18 others when it flipped Tuesday. Fred Reinthaler, the woman's husband, and the couple's two daughters aged nine and 11 were injured in the crash.

An ambulance sits parked next to an overturned bus in Mahahual, Quintana Roo state, Mexico, Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017. "The protection of US citizens overseas is one of the highest priorities for [the State Department]".

A U.S. Embassy spokesman said in an emailed statement that U.S. officials "are in contact with local authorities and are working with them to determine if there were U.S. citizens on board".

The Associated Press reported the passengers were from two Royal Caribbean Cruises ships.

Of the 13 passengers who were injured, three were from Canada, four from Brazil and four from the United States, according to the Quintana Roo government.

The injured were taken to hospitals in Bacalar and Chetumal.

"Our deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones or were injured in the terrible bus accident in Quintana Roo yesterday".

Traveler Donna Roehr offered condolences Wednesday to the victims of the crash as she and her family traveled through the area - on the same cruise line affected by the deadly crash. "We are doing all we can to care for our guests, including assisting with medical care and transportation", the company wrote on Twitter. She and 11 others died when the tour bus they were on flipped over on the highway yesterday, on a trip to see Mayan ruins.

The government of Quintana Roo said in a statement that it was investigating the cause of the accident.

More than a dozen cruise bus excursion accidents have happened near Caribbean ports of call over the last decade, Miami maritime lawyer James Walker of Walker & O'Neill told the Miami Herald.

Images from the scene show the covered bus toppled on its side after the driver lost control of the vehicle. The 2,490-passenger Serenade of the Seas departed December 15 from Fort Lauderdale on a seven-night cruise to Key West, Honduras and Cozumel. A passenger on another bus that passed just minutes after the crash said he observed skid marks on the dry pavement.

Company spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez says in an email, "Out of respect for the privacy of the families involved, we will not be providing any additional details on their condition or location".

He said he didn't see the crash.

It was shortly after 9 a.m. and a convoy of buses from the cruise port at Mahahual was headed to Chacchoben, he said.

"The news from Costa Maya about a bus accident involving Celebrity Equinox and Serenade of the Seas guests is heartbreaking".

Tow trucks were lifting up the bus when they passed by, he said.
