Amazon acquires Blink, a smart home surveillance company

Only months after rolling out its new Amazon Key delivery service involving automatic locks and security cameras, Amazon has acquired the startup Blink, which specializes in much the same products. Blink first surfaced in 2014 with a Kickstarter campaign for a wire-free camera that raised more than $1 million. Blink is most well-known for its line of intelligent security cameras, which can last up to two years using a couple of AA batteries.

The fact there's no need to run a cable to the devices makes them much easier to install than wired alternatives, a major advantage in the consumer electronics market. The companies announced the deal on Friday. "We'll continue to operate under the Amazon umbrella selling and supporting the same great products you know and love". Blink announced the acquisition in a brief blog post on its website, and no financial terms were disclosed.

Amazon told CNBC, "As one of their distributors, we already know customers love their home security cameras and monitoring systems". Although, Amazon has already manufactured its own home cameras, Blink offers a stronger security that allows homeowners to monitor package drop offs at their phone. "We're excited to welcome their team and invent together on behalf of customers", an Amazon spokesperson wrote in an email to Mashable.

For Blink customers, changes doesn't seem to be coming immediately.

Amazon will begin doling out cash to developers who build Alexa skills with high customer engagement metrics.
