Theresa May's deputy Damian Green resigns after pornography allegations

Breaking news

But it found he made two "misleading" and "inaccurate" statements about knowledge of the claims.

Damian Green, British Prime Minister Theresa May's first secretary of state and effective deputy, resigned on the heels of an official investigation about an allegation that pornography was found on one of his parliamentary office computers.

Green, 61, has been a close friend of May since they were at Oxford University, and he is one of her closest political allies.

Investigation finds Green was not honest when he claimed he was not told that pornography was found on his Westminster computer by Police in 2008.

London's Metropolitan Police had told Green about the pornography found, the Cabinet Office noted, without drawing conclusions on whether he had viewed the material.

In a letter to May, he said: "From the outset I have been clear that I did not download or view pornography on my parliamentary computers".

Green stepped down after he was indicted for breaching ministerial code.

Ms Maltby is not commenting on Mr Green's resignation until she receives more details from the Cabinet Office.

Mr Green has apologised for his "misleading" statements in his letter of resignation, but also denied he downloaded the material.

The PM went on: "This falls short of the Seven Principles of Public Life and is a breach of the ministerial code - a conclusion which has been endorsed by Sir Alex Allan, the independent adviser on ministers' interests".

'It is therefore with deep regret and enduring attitude for the contribution you have make over many years, that I asked you to resign from the Government and have accepted your resignation'.

The investigation into Green concluded that his conduct as a minister "has generally been both professional and proper" but that while there were "competing and contradictory accounts", Maltby's accusations were "plausible".

They praised their 31-year-old daughter for her courage in speaking out about the "abuse of authority".

"I apologise that my statements were misleading on this point", he said.

Mr Green's political future has been in question since journalist and Conservative activist Ms Maltby suggested he had behaved inappropriately towards her in an article last month for the Times.
