Mexico tourist bus crash leaves 12 dead, 20 injured

An ambulance sits parked next to an overturned bus in Mahahual Quintana Roo state Mexico on Tuesday

The state government said that in addition to the 12 people killed, three Canadians, four Brazilians, four Americans and two Swedes had to be hospitalized for treatment of injuries.

The tour bus was transporting cruise ship passengers from two Royal Caribbean cruise ships, the Celebrity Equinox and Serenade of the Seas, to Mayan ruins at Chacchoben, about 175 kilometres south of Tulum, when it flipped over on the highway, authorities said.

Haim Shababo of Fort Lauderdale said Wednesday that his mother-in-law, Fanya Shamis, was among the bus passengers killed in the crash.

The coach overturned while traveling from the coastal village of Mahahual to the Mayan ruins at Chacchoben.

"Our hearts go out to all those involved in the bus accident", company spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez said.

The bus ended up on its side in vegetation along the two-lane road.

The bus was carrying 31 people, including tourists from the United States, Canada, Italy, Brazil and Sweden, in the state of Quintana Roo, according to Public Security of Quintana Roo. Video taken after the crash showed some survivors lying on the pavement and others walking around. They knew the driver's identity and would get a statement from him, but were not sure if he was in a hospital or still at home, the prosecutor said. The cause of the accident is under investigation and it is unknown at this time what caused the bus to lose control and to flip over.

The agency also said Mexican officials have been in contact with consular offices to assist families of the victims and injured.
