White House Officially Blames North Korea For Massive 'WannaCry' Cyberattack

BREAKING NEWS

Paying didn't unlock their computers, Bossert wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that was published Monday.

The latest reports, however, suggest the USA is going to formally accuse North Korea of the attacks soon.

President Donald Trump's homeland security adviser, Tom Bossert, said the country was "directly responsible" for the ransomware attack that hit 81 out of 236 NHS trusts in England, plus a further 595 GP practices.

"We do not make this allegation lightly", he added.

In the piece titled "It's Official: North Korea is Behind WannaCry", Bossert characterized the attack as "cowardly, costly and careless". "The consequences were beyond economic", Mr. Bossert said.

"North Korea has done everything wrong as an actor on the global stage that a country can do", he told reporters Tuesday during a White House briefing.

London had already blamed North Korea, which hit a third of Britain's public hospitals.

Bossert warned of the threat from Russian hackers and touted legal action taken against suspected hackers as well as the Trump administration's decision to ban software from the Russia-based company Kaspersky Lab in government computers.

"So this is allowing us to call on all likeminded and good, responsible companies to stop supporting North Korean hackers, whether they're operating in North Korea or elsewhere", Bossert said. In October, the British government publicly declared that it believed North Korea was the culprit.

CNN reported in June that United Kingdom intelligence believed a group associated with the North Korean government was behind the attack, and The Washington Post reported around the same time that the National Security Agency had reached a similar conclusion.

"Repeatedly, exploits in the hands of governments have leaked into the public domain and caused widespread damage", he said, claiming that the National Security Agency of spotting the flaw and saying nothing.

North Korea has been developing cyber capabilities as trade sanctions and a debilitated domestic economy make it hard to invest in conventional military capabilities, said Tom Uren, a visiting fellow at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute's International Cyber Policy Centre. In addition to the U.K., Australia, Canada and Japan are among countries that agree with the US analysis, Bossert said.
