First look at next-gen pickup truck

2019 Chevrolet Silverado

General Motors is showing off an all-new version of the Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck.

Not all of 2019 Silverados will look like this, and that's because the 1500 has gained a trim level called Trail Boss. While the new Silverado grille is still dominated by strong horizontal lines, it no longer stretches all the way from side to side and top to bottom, instead being pushed up by a bolder bumper and in by the thinner headlights and bodywork.

Chevy has not announced what will power the new 2019 Silverado, but we'll have all the details next month in Detroit. The truck was helicoptered into the speedway with General Motors president for North America Alan Batey on hand for the show.

Amid the scores of Chevy trucks on display arranged to spell "100", the one that got the most attention arrived from above. The pickup uses higher-grade alloys in its construction, and high-tensile-strength steel in the bed floor. "For the Chevy Truck Centennial, we wanted to recognize the customers who have made Chevrolet part of their lives, and have them help kick off the next 100 years of Chevy Trucks". For now, the company chose to present the 2019 Silverado in the new LT Trailboss trim - one of eight available soon - which makes use of the off-road prowess of the Z71 package, along with a two-inch suspension lift and also brings a host of design enhancements.

The 2019 Silverado is all new all the time. Chevrolet

With its factory lift kit, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Trail Boss that debuted Saturday at a surprise event deep in the heart of pickup country has big boots to fill. Chevrolet says this is fully tested, validated and warrantied by Chevrolet, so customers need not resort to aftermarket solutions. Since then, Chevrolet has sold more than 85 million trucks. There is plenty of meat on the tires, and it looks like a manufacturer is finally going to offer a larger tire size with a smaller wheel size.

The 2019 Silverado boasts a striking design compared with the current model. Do you want one in your driveway? Nowhere is there any mention of aluminum - not surprising, given Chevrolet's very public criticism of Ford's new bodies and beds.

We'll find out more at the Detroit auto show in January.
