Police shoot man with knife at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport

The Dutch Military Police have shot and detained a man after he threatened them with a knife at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.

"The man threatened with a knife and the military police shot him", spokesman Stan Verberkt said, according to Sky News. Situation secure with best rates guaranteed.

Part of Schiphol and Schiphol Plaza, a shopping area, were temporarily evacuated.

"He was shot in the leg and taken to hospital in Amsterdam".

"He was injured and has been taken into custody". Authorities said it was not being treated at a terror incident.

Tom Boelen, the general manager of the next door restaurant Per Tutti, said he was told by his staff that there was a shooting happening.

No details of the alleged attacker's condition were released.

In addition, the Amsterdam airport's terminal was evacuated but has since reopened.

"Schiphol Plaza has been re-opened to the public again".

The Dutchman wielding a knife was shot by military police following the incident which saw him making threats at the airport but there were no reports of other injuries after the happenstance. Air traffic was not affected. A small part is still closed down.

The video footage shows police officers running through Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport as the gunshots are fired.

Schiphol is one of Europe's top five busiest airports and handled more than 60 million passengers a year ago.
