This will be first smartphone manufacturer with inscreen fingerprint sensor

We've been waiting a long time for a phone with a fingerprint scanner built into the screen and it looks like Vivo is going to be the first to launch one, and that it will be coming very soon.

Vivo, a company whose name might not be familiar to you, is actually a top-five smartphone maker thanks to its large presence in Chine.

Earlier this week, Synaptics Inc. had announced that it has started mass production with top five OEMs of its first optical in-display fingerprint sensors.Dubbed Clear ID FS9500, the optical fingerprint sensors deliver one-touch high-resolution scanning through full cover glass enabling sleek, button-free, bezel-free infinity displays.

Vivo has been experimenting with phones with in-screen fingerprint sensors for some time now.

Samsung and Apple have both struggled to integrate fingerprint sensors into smartphone displays, creating workarounds like iris scanners and Face ID instead. In order for it to work, the finger has to be illuminated, so that the fingerprint scanner can read the reflections of the finger scan. However, Forbes' Patrick Moorhead recently went hands-on with one of the company's test units, and reported the experience was "fast and simple".

If you are a bit curious about the new in-screen sensor created by Synaptics, this is a small CMOS device planted below an AMOLED display. It is Vivo which was hailed at 5th position by the IDC report.

In-screen fingerprint sensors have been considered as a natural evolution of modern biometric sensors as the smartphone displays this year moved to an edge-to-edge concept. The company will be showcasing a live demo of the new in-display fingerprint sensor at CES 2018. The fact that the sensors are now being mass-produced is a clear indication that it will be showing up on a smartphone by next year.

"FWIW, this means the user can have an edge-to-edge OLED smartphone and use their finger to open the device without the need for a 3D camera or having the reader on the back of the smartphone", he said in a separate tweet. It also becomes a blunder if you try to make your device different in term so rarely placed fingerprint sensor as seen on Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8.
