Facebook Plans Pre-Roll Advertisements

Facebook Plans Pre-Roll Advertisements

Currently, it streams shows from Vox and Discovery Communications Inc.

If you too find yourself returning to Facebook for the videos, you might have come across an issue that causes just the live variety to lose audio. The world's largest social networking site has said on December 14 that it would begin promoting videos more prominently inside its News Feed.

Everyone's least favorite ads are coming to Facebook, but six-second pre-rolls will only appear on original Watch tab videos you purposefully view and not in the News Feed. The introduction of pre-roll is part of the company's plans to make its platforms more appealing to video creators, who have so far overwhelmingly used channels like Google's YouTube and Twitter's now-defunct Vine. In its blog post, Facebook said it would no longer allow ads in the middle of videos unless the videos are at least three minutes long. This is a shift from the previous policy of eligibility for ad breaks started at videos of 90 seconds and the first break possible at the 20-second mark.

Facebook's News Feed, which now comprises posts from friends and businesses, is the first thing users see when they open its mobile app or log in to their account on a desktop, which makes it a valuable spot for Facebook to display advertisements.

However, this does not mean the entire News Feed is going to be full of video ads for users. It [Facebook] said the initial test it carried out showed that satisfaction improved by 18 percent when Ad Breaks were delayed. By so doing, show creators will be able to grow an audience for new shows, while people will be able to connect with content they may be interested in. This, according to the research it carried out, showed that people will most likely continue to watch the content through the break.

The update is relatively small (and most users probably won't even notice), but it's yet another way for Facebook to push video content - and also use its unknown troves of user data to keep people on the platform.
