Egyptian Singer Sentenced To Prison For "Inciting Debauchery, Harming Public Morality"

Egyptian singer sentenced to two years over suggestive music video

Meanwhile, in 2015, a similar case a year ago saw Egyptian courts sentence two female belly dancers to six months in prison also for "inciting debauchery", which prosecutors argued harmed the image of Egyptian women and damaged public morality.

She was sentenced along with Gamal to two years in prison yesterday (December 13) for "inciting debauchery".

Egyptian singer Shyma caused a storm when she released the video for her single I Have Issues, which attracted over a million views in 48 hours, The Telegraph reports.

The music video "I have issues" stirred controversy as Shyma appeared in her underwear and acted suggestively by eating a banana before young men.

Shyma previously apologised for the video but didn't expect the outcry. Last year, three women were jailed for six months each for dancing in music videos.

Shyma took to her Facebook at the time to apologize for the music video and stated that she hadn't expected it would backfire and erupt debates. Both defendants were accused of inciting debauchery and producing a video harming public morality.

Sherine Abdel-Wahab, a famous Arab singer, was banned from performing in her native Egypt after advising against drinking from the Nile River.

Shyma, whose real name is Shaimaa Ahmed, was arrested on 18 November before being referred to the prosecution for investigation. She alleges that she was forced into the provocative poses by the video's director, who included the scenes in the final cut without her consent.

A lawsuit was filed last month after video emerged showing Sherine Abdel Wahab being asked at a concert past year to sing Mashrebtesh Men Nilha (Have You Drunk From The Nile?).
