Annihilation trailer pits Natalie Portman against biological horrors

This likely makes more sense as a big-budget film, showing the biologist (Natalie Portman) entering Area X to find out what happened to her husband (Oscar Isaac), who returned from his mission in pretty bad shape. With Garland writing (screenplay) and helming, Portman in the lead, and a cast that includes Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez and Benedict Wong, this is a no-brainer - a must see - but there is one thing that troubles me just a little.

While the new trailer dives deeper into the story than the Annihilation teaser before it, both previews emphasize the movie's surreal visuals and horror/thriller aspects over everything else.

Alex Garland has created an incredible sci-fi film with Ex Machina, and I'm ready for anything he has cooked up for moviegoers.

In 2015, Alex Garland made his directorial debut with Ex Machina, a psychological sci-fi thriller that made him one of the most exciting filmmakers in the genre. Listen to that conversation below... and watch the trailer above. They are not the first group to attempt to explore and study the area and they're armed with the knowledge that terrible things have befallen every other group to enter. The change in distribution is in part a response to poor test screenings of the film, which reportedly caused producer David Ellison (Terminator Genisys) to become concerned that the current cut of the movie is "too intellectual" and "too complicated" to appeal to a broad audience.

Annihilation is set to open on February 23, 2018. Today, the studio released a new trailer that shows off the utter strangeness of Area X. We never learn Portman's character's name beyond The Biologist, which gives VanderMeer's story the tone of a case-study.
