Liverpool's Mohamed Salah declared himself "very happy" after being crowned the 2017 BBC African Footballer of the Year on Monday.

"I am very happy to win this award", Salah told BBC Sport.

Every year, Africa's best player is named based on fans' votes.

He becomes the first Egyptian to win the prize since Mohamed Aboutrika in 2008.

Salah is Egypt's fifth top scorer in history with 31 worldwide goals, surpassing Amr Zaki.

As the season goes on, and the transfer market continues to explode, with players such as Sergei Milinkovic-Savic being touted for €100m transfers, Liverpool's acquisition of Mohamed Salah for just over £35m looks more and more like a bargain everyday.

"I want to be the best Egyptian ever so I work hard".

He also added: "I want everyone in Egypt to follow my way".

Salah memorably stepped up to net a stoppage-time penalty against the Congolese to confirm the Pharaohs' participation, in one of the great moments in African football over the last 12 months.

He has had club stints with English Premier League side, Chelsea, before moving on to play with Roma in the Italian league from where he joined Liverpool.

Salah is now the third consecutive Premier League star to win the prolific award.

While Salah has made a name for himself at Liverpool since his summer move from Roma, his biggest achievement to date came for his country.

"Salah has won and we all have to congratulate him".
